Mass Effect Andromeda group shot! This was drawn in July, during San Diego Comicon, but it just occurred to me that I never posted about it here!
Usually, BioWare has a photobooth at their SDCC booth, but they wanted to something different this year. The plan was to blow up the original trilogy group shot I drew for the Mass Effect Coloring Book to 60x60 inches, and let people color on that, while I drew a brand new piece next to it, live on the show floor!
Armed with a printout of a digital sketch I worked out beforehand, a tablet I loaded with Andromeda character references, and a ziplock back full of brush Sharpies, I spent four days going at that 60x60 canvas!
Notes on the shots above-
1- The finished piece! 2- The final art was drawn on the show floor, but the composition was sketched digitally beforehand. Here’s the initial sketch. 3- Before the storm. Here are the blank canvases waiting for it to start! 4- First ink lines down! It all starts with Sara Ryders face. 5- Progress! Got about a quarter of it inked in! 6- Jaal close up! At this point I decided to start adding color accents with metallic Sharpies. 7- Look who came by!! Danielle Rayne and Fryda Wolff!! AKA, the voices of Vetra Nyx and Sara Ryder! They were so awesome, and I totally geeked out at them! 8- I finished earlier than expected, so what left to do but doodle on the wall next to it? Here are some silly doodles of the Andromeda fam! Yes, that’s Ghost Dad Alec Ryder :D 9- Followed, of course, by doodles of the original trilogy crew! But somehow I forgot Grunt! :( :( Noooo, my Krogan son… 10- Everything all together, in one shot!
Bonus: Vetra and Sara have a moment together while I draw behind them, haha!
So BioWare is having a merch sale. Which is fine, and I open up my email, because, being me, I fucking love Mass Effect. It’s going to be my second tattoo, an N7 on my left shoulder, after i finish my first marathon (because you have to earn it.)
And what are they selling?
Generic 10th anniversary tee. Alright. I considered it, just because I already have the hoodie and a couple pairs of sweats. So I click the link and I kept scrolling.
I shouldn’t have.
and, last of all:
Nothing Mass Effect Trilogy related. No reapers. Neither Shepard. No Jack Tattoo Sleeve. No Normandy figurines. No Citadels or concept art or…anything. The only thing Trilogy-related is fucking tiki mugs, three of them, which you buy with 3 Andromeda mugs too.
What the fuck are you doing, BioWare/EA? Andromeda is literally the thing that killed the franchise, even moreso than the Take Back ME3 movement.
I wanted to buy something. I got paid last week, I’ve got plenty of money leftover. I love Mass Effect. I converted my brother and cousin (just like the Witcher), I pumped over 1,200 hours into Mass Effect 3. Over 300 hours into ME2. Over a hundred into ME1. I am going to have kids, wait until they’re teens, and then force them to play the original Mass Effect Trilogy. That series is arguably the best trilogy of games ever made.
